Two amorphous portraits, born from a dialogue between distortion and beauty, aim to challenge Western ideals of femininity. Inspired by Katalin Ladik and Ana Mendieta’s feminist experiments—where faces pressed against glass became acts of defiance—the distortion here emerges through movement against a scanner’s light bar, capturing moments of flux as the image stretches and shifts. Pastel overlays, evoking Henry Tonks’s tender portraits of wounded World War I soldiers, add a tactile and hand-made layer to the inkjet prints.
Many thanks to Johanne M. and Camilla B. for so kindly lending their faces.
